FAQs for glue-on hoofshoe RALLY from Hoofstar

The Hoofstar Rally can also be used as a laminated glue-on shoe for deer horses. There are two ways to create a floating toe.

Either a sole is inserted into the shoe with the toe cut out at the front. Now you just have to make sure that the gap that has been created at the front does not fill up with glue again. This can be prevented by filling the gap with foil, for example, while gluing. We like to use the shoe pads from glue-u as soles.

Or you can shorten the Hoofstar Rally at the front of the toe. One to a maximum of two holes may be removed from the side flaps (of course, it also depends on the size of the glue fitting). You can shorten the shoe with a saw or rasp. However, such special shoes should always be left to professionals, i.e. trained farriers and blacksmiths.

Hoof pads or kneading pads can also be used for lifting shoes. In the case of a kneading pad, both components are kneaded together evenly by hand, moulded onto the bottom of the hoof, mesh is cut to the respective hoof size, placed on the kneading pad and then the shoe is placed on top. The shoe is glued on in the next step.

With buck hooves there is a risk that the Hoofstar glue-on shoe will not fit. Buck hooves tend to be very long. If you measure the width to choose the right size, the shoe may simply be too short because you are trying to glue a rather round shoe to an elongated hoof.

If you have a horse with buck hooves, please send us the exact measurements of the hoof to the nearest millimetre by e-mail to info@hoofstar.com or by Whatsapp to +49 (0)151/ 55 84 03 81. It is important that you actually measure the length and the width. We will then tell you whether Hoofstar is suitable for your horse or not.

We speak of underrun heels when the heel walls are left too long and as a result the heels grow further and further forward. This has meanwhile become a common problem in horses, and is already referred to as a kind of disease of civilisation.

If the heel walls are left too long, the heels grow further and further forward. The corner struts, which are also too long, lever the sole upwards, while the pads are squeezed inwards. This results in a "pushing under" of the heels. The end edges of the heels should actually be on the same level as the widest part of the frog, but instead they are more or less far in front of it.

Underrun heels are often found in connection with very long, flat hooves and pressing corner struts.

Is hoof protection recommended?

Many Hoofstar customers ask whether the Hoofstar glued shoe can also be used with the underrun heels.  Short answer: Yes, the Hoofstar glue-on shoe can also be used for underrun heels.

However, the Hoofstar does not guarantee that the underrun heels will improve. An experienced hoof care professional must work hand in hand with the horse. Only with correctly trimmed hooves will the situation of the underrun heels improve.

Usually our glue-on shoeing lasts 6 to 9 weeks on the hoof. We recommend that you remove the adhesive shoe after 8 weeks at the latest and carry out hoof care, otherwise the hoof will become too long. After hoof care, the hoof can be glued again with the Hoofstar glue-on shoe.

The rally is reusable depending on the abrasion, i.e. the old shoe can easily be glued on after hoof care.

Approximately 10 minutes after gluing the Hoofstar adhesive shoe to the hoof, the shoe can be easily loaded. Lightly loaded means that the horse can be walked back and forth.

The shoe is fully loadable after about one to two hours. Fully loadable means that you can take the horse out for a ride again. In winter it is better to wait two hours because the glue needs longer to harden.

For an optimal fit of the Hoofstar adhesive shoe, we recommend leaving the horse in the stable for 1 to 2 hours after gluing. Afterwards, the horse can be returned to the pasture or ridden.

Application questions

The best way to remove Hoofstar is to use a pair of nippers or a pair of iron pliers.Use them to grip the upper edge of the side flap.  This is levered downwards (unrolled or overstretched). The side flaps are very flexible, so you don't have to worry about them breaking. The adhesive remains on the hoof due to the unrolling movement and the Hoofstar adhesive shoe can be used again after a short cleaning.

Important: Always work in the direction of growth of the hoof (from top to bottom). This ensures that no horn tears off.

To remove the glue, it is best to heat the glue fitting, either in a pot of boiling water, in the microwave or with a heat gun. The shoe can withstand 100 degrees, so boiling water is no problem, only with the hot air gun you have to make sure that the material does not melt.

Then, using a pair of nippers or iron pliers, grab a side tab and overstretch it by bending it outwards. This will cause the glue to come off. Then, using a pointed object such as a hoof scraper, the glue can be pricked out through the holes from the outside in.
