Hoofstar Winterguide

Cold temperatures as well as ice and snow pose particular challenges for glue-on shoes and hoof protection. Learn what you need to bear in mind when using Widia pins in hoof boots and how you can prevent the adhesive horseshoe or hoof protection from being crushed.

Widia pins

Increased safety and slip resistance

Widia pins are highly abrasion-resistant spikes made of tungsten carbide. We use them to prevent a horse with Hoofstar hoof boots or adhesive shoes from slipping on wet grass, tarmac, ice or snow. Up to 6 Widia pins can be used per shoe or shoeing. The pins are inserted with a bit insert for the cordless drill.

What should you look out for when gluing?

Der Rally Klebebeschlag wird mit einem Zweikomponentenkleber auf den Huf geklebt. Du hast die Wahl: Du kannst entweder Acrylkleber (Shubond) oder PU-Kleber (Shufix) verwenden. The acrylic adhesive takes about 2 minutes to cure. However, it must be preheated to 25 to 30 degrees. This is best done in hand-warm water or in a baby bottle warmer. The glue will not harden at a temperature below 15 degrees. If it is heated above 50 degrees, it will disintegrate.

The PU adhesive runs very viscously at cold temperatures. It is recommended to preheat it to approx. 10 degrees. It is sufficient to store it in the car on the heater or to wear it under the jacket while the hoof is being prepared for the adhesive shoeing.

What helps to prevent adhesive fittings from rolling up?

The Rally glue-on shoe is less prone to rolling up than a classic horseshoe, as the shoe is very flexible without a metal core. The snow can always come loose through movement.

However, if a horse does have a tendency to roll up, a foam or sponge rubber sheet can be inserted into the shoe (before gluing). This helps to loosen the snow from the shoe.

Alternatively, a liquid pad of medium or hard consistency can be used to either fill the sole or form a ring along the sole.
