How to determine the right size
For RUNA, one value matters most: the hoof width.
1. Measure the hoof width exactly
Measure the width at the widest part of the hoof – and make sure it is accurate to the millimetre. “About 11 - 11.5 cm” is unfortunately not precise enough here.
2. Use the length only as a check
The length is checked afterwards.
It helps to see whether the hoof fits the selected size overall.
3. Let the size be calculated easily

Avoid common mistakes
Please measure precisely to the millimetre. Inaccurate measurements are one of the most common reasons for choosing the wrong size.
Make sure you only measure to the end of the weight-bearing edge. Often, the entire hoof is measured by mistake, which makes the length appear too large.
Do not deliberately choose a larger shoe just to make the length fit. This does not work, as the shoe will then have too much movement and individual tabs may come loose as a result.
Always measure both hooves separately. Many horses have differently sized hooves and may need two different sizes.

Does RUNA fit every hoof?
In short: No – and that is important to know.
RUNA was developed for a wide range of hoof shapes, but there are cases where the shoe does not fit optimally:
- very long, narrow hooves
- pronounced club hooves
- hooves with a strongly irregular shape
👉 In these cases, the hoof may fit in terms of width, but be too long for the shoe.
Why we do not recommend a larger size in this case
A common thought is:
“Then I’ll simply take one size larger.”
👉 With RUNA, this deliberately does not work.
A larger size would provide more length, but:
- the shoe becomes too wide and has too much movement
- it no longer sits securely
- and it will come loose more quickly
