How to fit RUNA

Fitting involves three clear steps: adjust the size, prepare the hoof and glue on RUNA. Take enough time to prepare the hoof – a clean, dry and grease-free bonding surface is essential for a secure hold.

Before you start

What you need

Get everything ready before you begin. This helps you work calmly and focus on each step.

  • RUNA in the correct size
  • RUNA special adhesive
  • Hoof rasp with a fine side
  • Isopropyl alcohol (pure alcohol without additives) and a clean, lint-free cloth
  • Alternatively: Shu Cleaner for degreasing
  • Bolt, nut and suitable tool to secure the size setting

Not sure which size to choose?

Measure the widest part of the hoof. If the measurement is exactly on the boundary between two sizes, the size guide can help you decide which option to try.

1

Adjust the RUNA size

Start by measuring the widest part of the hoof. Only if the measurement is exactly on the boundary between two sizes can you try both options: a triangular hoof that widens towards the heels may fit the smaller size set as wide as possible; a rounder hoof may fit the larger size set as small as possible.

  1. Measure the widest part of the hoof.
  2. Choose the RUNA size that fits the measurement and hoof shape.
  3. Press the shoe together until it clicks into place.
  4. Check that the heels sit fully inside the shoe.
  5. Secure the selected size with the bolt and nut.
The most important fit check: The heels must sit fully inside the shoe. Also check that the toe reaches the front.

Position the heels fully inside

Roughen and degrease the hoof

The adhesive bonds reliably only to clean, dry, freshly prepared hoof horn. Remove the smooth outer layer (patina) and prepare the bonding surface carefully.

  1. Roughen the bonding surface with the fine side of the hoof rasp.
  2. Remove the outer patina until the horn is clean and slightly roughened.
  3. Thoroughly degrease the area with isopropyl alcohol (pure alcohol without additives) and a clean, lint-free cloth.
  4. Alternatively, use Shu Cleaner according to its instructions.
  5. Do not touch the cleaned bonding surface with bare hands afterwards.
Important: Grease, dirt or remaining patina can weaken the bond. Do not touch the bonding surface after degreasing.
3

Glue on RUNA

Attach RUNA one tab at a time. Work calmly and carefully. The adhesive reacts when you press the tab into place, so there is no need to rush while applying it.

  1. Bend one adhesive tab away from the hoof.
  2. Apply a very small amount of adhesive in a thin layer.
  3. Spread the adhesive evenly with the nozzle.
  4. Put the adhesive bottle down so both hands are free.
  5. Press the tab evenly with both thumbs for 10 seconds (at least 5 seconds).
  6. Then glue the tab on the opposite side, followed by the remaining tabs.
Less is more: A thin layer of adhesive is enough. Adhesive running down the plastic can make it brittle.
Use a small amount of adhesive
Spread it with the nozzle
Press each tab for 10 seconds (minimum 5)

Final check

Check the fit

  • Are the heels fully inside the shoe?
  • Does the toe reach the front?
  • Are all tabs securely glued?
  • Is any material protruding unnecessarily?
  • Does any protruding material need to be rounded off or trimmed?

Once everything fits

Your RUNA is now properly fitted and ready for use. When you want to remove it later, you can clean it, check it and reuse it.

Remove & reuse RUNA
Watch out for excess material: Material that extends too far can increase the risk of the horse stepping on it. Trim or round off any excess as needed.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions about fitting

Do I need to weld or cut RUNA to size?

No. RUNA comes ready to fit. Adjust the size, then glue it to the hoof. Any protruding material can be trimmed if needed.

Do I need to warm up the adhesive?

No, you do not need to warm up the RUNA special adhesive.

How much adhesive should I use?

Very little. A thin layer is enough. Spread it evenly across the bonding surface with the nozzle.

How long should I press each tab?

Aim for 10 seconds of even pressure per tab; press for at least 5 seconds.

Why is my RUNA not holding properly?

First, check the preparation: Did you remove the patina with the fine side of the rasp? Did you degrease the surface thoroughly? Was it dry, and did you avoid touching it after degreasing?

Find the right RUNA solution for your horse

First, check the hoof width and choose the right size. In the RUNA section, you’ll find the glue-on shoe and matching accessories for fitting, care and reuse.
